It does retract with water, but it does not retract when the water pressure is high. You can turn the faucet off and open the nozzle to drain it as it retracts.

The tension of the coil spring can't be loosened because it needs to sustain a 82ft water hose. Please DO NOT try to loosen it because this is very dangerous!
